20-Year-Old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Pennsylvania Identified as Shooter
Former President Donald Trump was injured in an assassination attempt Saturday night when a gunman opened fire at a rally in Cleveland, Ohio. The shots rang out at 6:10 p.m., and Trump was struck in the chest. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition, but is now stable.
Suspect Dead at the Scene
The FBI identified the suspect as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. Crooks was killed by security at the rally.
According to witnesses, Crooks fired multiple shots at Trump from a distance of about 50 feet. Several people in the crowd were also injured in the shooting.
Trump Praises Crowd
After the shooting, Trump praised the crowd at the rally for how they reacted. He said, "I'm not supposed to be here. I'm supposed to be dead. But you saved my life."
Biden Reacts to Shooting
President Joe Biden also reacted to the shooting, saying, "This is a senseless act of violence that has no place in our society. We must condemn this attack and work together to prevent future tragedies like this from happening."
The shooting is still under investigation.
