Berhalters Departure Follows Disappointing Copa America Exit

Gregg Berhalter: Fired as US Men's National Soccer Team Coach

Berhalter's Departure Follows Disappointing Copa America Exit

On December 5, 2022, the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) announced the firing of Gregg Berhalter as head coach of the United States Men's National Soccer Team. The decision came just nine days after the team's disappointing first-round exit from the Copa America.

Reasons for Berhalter's Firing

According to the USSF, Berhalter was fired due to the team's poor performance at the Copa America. The team finished bottom of its group, losing to both Canada and Panama. This marked the first time that the US Men's National Team had failed to advance from the group stage of a major tournament since 2002.

In addition to the team's poor results, Berhalter also faced criticism for his management style. Some players reportedly felt that he was too authoritarian and did not listen to their feedback.

Berhalter's Legacy

Berhalter was hired as head coach of the US Men's National Team in December 2018. During his tenure, he led the team to a CONCACAF Gold Cup victory in 2019 and to the knockout stage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. However, his legacy will be somewhat tarnished by the team's disappointing Copa America exit.
