Early Life and Political Career
Diosdado Pangan Macapagal, often referred to by his initials DPM, was born on September 28, 1910. He earned a law degree and was admitted to the bar in 1936. Macapagal's political career began as a member of the House of Representatives, where he served from 1949 to 1957. He was elected Vice President of the Philippines in 1957, during the presidency of Carlos P. Garcia.
Presidency and Reforms
Diosdado Macapagal was elected President of the Philippines in 1961, becoming the nation's ninth president. During his presidency, Macapagal initiated several significant reforms, including the signing of the Land Reform Code in 1963. This law aimed to redistribute land ownership and improve the lives of Filipino farmers. Macapagal also introduced a number of economic and social policies aimed at reducing poverty and inequality.
Post-Presidency and Legacy
After completing his term as president, Macapagal remained active in public life. He served as President of the Constitutional Convention from 1970 to 1972, where he played a key role in drafting the new Philippine Constitution. Diosdado Macapagal passed away on April 21, 1997, leaving behind a legacy of political leadership and commitment to social justice.
