Lebanon: Armed clashes and government resignation

Violence erupts in Beirut

Armed clashes between sectarian militias briefly turned Beirut neighborhoods into a war zone on Thursday. The fighting broke out in the southern suburbs of the capital, a stronghold of the Shia Hezbollah movement. The clashes quickly spread to other parts of the city, including the downtown area. Several people were killed and injured in the violence.

Government resigns

The Lebanese government resigned on Monday amid growing public anger following a devastating explosion in Beirut on August 4. The explosion, which killed at least 171 people and injured more than 6,000, has been blamed on the government's negligence. Prime Minister Hassan Diab said that he and his government were stepping down to make way for a new government that could address the challenges facing the country.

Israeli airstrike

Israel's military said Tuesday it carried out a strike on Beirut targeting the militant commander allegedly behind the deadly explosion in the city's port last week. The strike killed the commander, who was identified as Jihad Mughniyeh. Hezbollah has denied that Mughniyeh was involved in the explosion.
